Rising from the lush valleys of the Mantiqueira Mountains, Parque Nacional do Itatiaia is Brazil's oldest national park, a stunning realm of granite peaks, alpine meadows, and cascading waterfalls. Just a few hours from Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo, this UNESCO Biosphere Reserve offers a cool escape into pristine Atlantic rainforest and high-altitude wilderness. Whether you're hiking to the summit of Pico das Agulhas Negras or bathing in the icy pools of Véu de Noiva, Itatiaia delivers raw, untamed beauty with a side of rich biodiversity.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Dedicate at least two full days to explore both the lower and upper parts of the park. Spend the first day hiking the lower trails and visiting waterfalls, then tackle the higher-altitude trails on day two. Overnight in the park's accommodation (like the historic Hotel do Ypê) or in the nearby town of Itatiaia to make the most of early morning wildlife spotting. If you're short on time, a day trip from Rio is possible but will feel rushed—prioritise the Véu de Noiva waterfall and a short hike.
