Parque Estadual da Serra do Mar
Parque Estadual da Serra do Mar is a vast protected area stretching along Brazil's coast, a lush corridor of Atlantic Forest that shields one of the planet's richest biodiversity hotspots. This is a place where mist-clad mountains plunge into the ocean, and ancient trees drip with bromeliads and orchids. For travellers craving raw nature, epic hikes, and a glimpse of Brazil's wild heart, this park delivers an unforgettable encounter with the untamed.
Highlights & What to See
- Trilha do Ouro (Gold Trail): A historic path once used by Portuguese gold smugglers, now a rugged trek through dense forest, past waterfalls and colonial ruins. It's a hike that blends history with jaw-dropping scenery.
- Pico do Corcovado: Not to be confused with Rio's statue, this peak in the Ubatuba region offers a challenging climb rewarded with panoramic views of the coastline and the emerald-green Serra do Mar range.
- Cachoeira do Prumirim: A magnificent waterfall in the Ubatuba area where you can swim in clear, cool pools surrounded by exuberant vegetation. Perfect for a refreshing break after a hike.
- Núcleo Picinguaba: The only park sector that touches the ocean, featuring pristine beaches, mangroves, and caiçara communities. Take a boat trip through the mangroves to spot kingfishers and capuchin monkeys.
- Núcleo Santa Virgínia: A lesser-visited section with excellent birdwatching, including the elusive manakins and tanagers. The Trilha do Poço do Anta leads to a natural pool frequented by tapirs.
Suggested Time to Spend
Dedicate at least three to four days to properly experience the park's diversity. Spend two days exploring the Ubatuba region (Núcleo Picinguaba and nearby waterfalls) and one to two days tackling the Trilha do Ouro or a summit hike. If you're short on time, a day trip from São Paulo can cover a single sector like Núcleo Santa Virgínia, but you'll miss the full spectrum of ecosystems. Pace yourself with early starts to avoid afternoon rain and bring plenty of water and insect repellent.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Ubatuba: A coastal town with over 100 beaches, lively surf culture, and excellent seafood. It's the main gateway to the park's southern sectors.
- Paraty: A colonial gem with cobblestone streets, whitewashed churches, and a stunning bay dotted with islands. Combine with the Trilha do Ouro, which ends near Paraty.
- São Paulo: Brazil's megacity is a two-hour drive from the park's northern sectors. Use it as a base for a day trip or bookend your adventure with urban culture.
- Ilhabela: An island archipelago off the coast, reachable by ferry from São Sebastião. It offers more Atlantic Forest trails, waterfalls, and some of the best sailing in Brazil.
