Paluma Range National Park, a lush World Heritage-listed rainforest in Queensland’s Wet Tropics, offers a cool mountain escape from the tropical coast. With misty waterfalls, ancient cycads, and sweeping views over the Coral Sea, it’s a haven for hikers, birdwatchers, and anyone craving a dose of wild nature. The park’s centrepiece is the historic village of Paluma, a charming outpost with a pub, art gallery, and walking trails that lead straight into the green.
Highlights & What to See
- Paluma Village – This quaint mountain hamlet (elev. 900 m) is the park’s gateway. Stroll the Paluma Environmental Centre, browse the local art gallery, and soak up the cool, misty atmosphere.
- Birthday Creek Falls – A short, steep walk leads to a stunning cascade plunging into a deep pool. Perfect for a refreshing dip after the hike.
- Clouds Lookout – A short drive from the village, this lookout offers jaw-dropping views across the coastal plain to the Coral Sea – best at sunrise or late afternoon.
- Jourama Falls – On the park’s eastern side, this seasonal waterfall is accessed via a 1.5 km walk through open forest and rock pools. Great for picnics.
- Mount Spec – The highest point in the park (1,100 m) offers challenging walks through cloud forest, rich with orchids, tree ferns, and endemic birds like the tooth-billed bowerbird.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors can experience the highlights in a full day: drive up from Townsville (about 1.5 hours), explore Paluma village, hike to Birthday Creek Falls, and catch the view at Clouds Lookout. If you’re keen on longer walks or birdwatching, plan an overnight stay at the Paluma village accommodation or one of the park’s campgrounds. Two days allow you to also tackle Mount Spec and Jourama Falls without rushing.
