Ormiston Gorge

Ormiston Gorge is a stunning natural amphitheatre carved into the red quartzite of the West MacDonnell Ranges, about 130km west of Alice Springs. Its permanent waterhole, shaded by ghost gums and flanked by towering cliffs, makes it a favourite for swimming and bushwalking. The gorge is part of the Larapinta Trail and offers a quintessential Outback experience, blending dramatic geology with serene waterholes.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Most visitors spend 2–4 hours, which allows time for a swim and the short Ghost Gum Lookout Walk. If you plan to do the full Pound Walk, allot at least 3–4 hours. To fully appreciate the gorge’s changing light, consider arriving late afternoon and staying until sunset. Overnight camping is available if you want to tackle longer Larapinta sections.
