Out in the red-dirt heart of South Australia, Oodnadatta is a classic outback town that feels like a living museum of pioneer history. With a population hovering around 200, this former railhead on the old Ghan line is now a must-stop on the Oodnadatta Track, offering dusty charm, a legendary pub, and easy access to the stark beauty of the Lake Eyre Basin. It’s a place where the silence is immense and the night sky puts on a show.
Highlights & What to See
- The Pink Roadhouse: An outback icon, this bright-pink service station is your go‑to for fuel, supplies, and the famous “Oodnadatta” bumper sticker – it’s also a great spot for a cold drink and a yarn with travellers.
- Oodnadatta Track: One of Australia’s great 4WD adventures, this 600‑km unsealed road traces the old Ghan railway line, passing historic ruins, mound springs, and the ghost town of Farina.
- Historic Railway Ruins: Wander the remains of the old Ghan station and railway yards, where you can still see the original railway sleepers and imagine the trains that once rumbled through.
- Mound Springs: A short drive away, these natural artesian springs are an oasis in the desert, supporting unique plant and bird life – try Blanche Cup or The Bubbler.
- Oodnadatta Cemetery: A poignant spot that tells the story of the town’s early settlers, with graves dating back to the 1890s and a real sense of isolation.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most travellers overnight in Oodnadatta as part of a longer outback loop. One full afternoon and evening is enough to see the town’s sights, have a beer at the Transcontinental Hotel (the “Oodnadatta Pub”), and watch the sunset over the gibber plains. If you’re driving the Oodnadatta Track, budget at least two days for the whole route from Marree to Coober Pedy, with a stop here as the perfect halfway point.
