Nourlangie (also known as Burrungkuy) is one of Kakadu National Park’s most spectacular rock-art sites, where ancient stories are painted on massive sandstone escarpments. The walk to the main gallery passes through monsoon forest and offers sweeping views of the surrounding floodplains and Arnhem Land escarpment. It’s a must-do for anyone interested in Aboriginal culture and the deep history of this World Heritage-listed landscape.
Highlights & What to See
- Nourlangie Rock Art Galleries – Marvel at vivid paintings of ancestral beings such as Namarrgon (Lightning Man) and the Rainbow Serpent, created over thousands of years. The main gallery is easily accessible via a 1.5 km loop walk.
- Gun-warddehwardde Lookout – A short side track from the main walk leads to this lookout with panoramic views across the Arnhem Land escarpment, especially stunning at sunrise or late afternoon.
- Anbangbang Billabong – A short drive from Nourlangie, this tranquil waterhole is perfect for spotting birds like jabirus, magpie geese, and whistling ducks, especially in the dry season.
- Aboriginal Interpretation – Read the informative signs that explain the meaning of the rock art and the seasonal rhythms of the Bininj/Mungguy people. Rangers often give free talks during peak season.
Suggested Time to Spend
Plan for 2–3 hours to fully appreciate Nourlangie. The 1.5 km loop walk takes about an hour at a leisurely pace, but allow extra time to sit at the galleries, absorb the views from the lookout, and read the interpretive panels. If you also visit Anbangbang Billabong, add another 30–60 minutes. Early morning or late afternoon offers the best light for photography and cooler walking conditions.
