Hienghène, New Caledonia
Hienghène, on the northeast coast of New Caledonia's Grande Terre, is a dramatic landscape where towering limestone pinnacles plunge into turquoise lagoons. This is Kanak country, rich in Melanesian culture and home to the iconic heart-shaped Roche Percée rock formation. - Village of Hienghène – Stroll the main street, visit the local market for fresh tropical fruit, and stop by the cultural centre to learn about Kanak traditions and the 1980s independence struggle.
- Hiengbène Bay & Mangrove Kayaking – Paddle through the calm, crystal-clear waters of the bay, weaving between limestone islets and through mangrove channels teeming with birdlife.
- Tiwaka River – Swim in the cool, fresh pools beneath small waterfalls; a favourite local spot for a picnic.
Suggested Time to Spend
Plan for two full days to do justice to Hienghène. Day one: explore the bay by kayak or boat, visit Roche Percée, and relax in the village. Day two: take a 4WD tour up to Lindéralique Plateau and spend the afternoon swimming in the Tiwaka River. If you have a third day, consider a guided walk into the mountains or a trip north to the remote beaches of Pouébo.

- Koumac – A laid-back town 90 minutes north, known for its superb snorkelling and the nearby Grotte de Koumac cave system.
- Poum – Remote and wild, with pristine beaches and a strong Kanak identity; accessible via a scenic 4WD track from Koumac.
- Poindimié – A small service town about an hour south, with a good market and access to the Col de Petchecara lookout.
- Île Ouen – A quiet island off the southern tip of Grande Terre, reachable by boat from Nouméa; perfect for a day of snorkelling and hiking.
- Nouméa – The capital, 4–5 hours south by road, offers museums, restaurants and the excellent Aquarium des Lagons.
