Nelson Lakes National Park is a pristine alpine wilderness in New Zealand's South Island, centred on the glacier-carved Rotoiti and Rotoroa lakes. This is a haven for trampers, kayakers, and nature lovers, offering lush beech forests, rugged mountain peaks, and clear, dark skies. The park's remote feel and well-maintained trails make it a perfect escape for those seeking solitude and breathtaking scenery.
Highlights & What to See
- Lake Rotoiti – The more accessible of the two main lakes, with a scenic shoreline track, swimming spots, and the famous Whisky Falls walk. Kayak or paddleboard on its calm, reflective waters.
- Mount Robert Circuit – A classic day hike offering panoramic views of Lake Rotoiti and the surrounding mountains. The track climbs through beech forest to open tussock slopes.
- Angelus Hut – A popular backcountry hut accessible via a challenging but rewarding tramp. The alpine lake and mountain views from the hut are spectacular.
- Lake Rotoroa – Quieter and wilder than Rotoiti, with the tranquil Braeburn Walk and opportunities for kayaking or fishing in its pristine waters.
- St Arnaud Range – A dramatic mountain backdrop visible from the lakes, with several tramping routes for experienced hikers, including the Travers-Sabine Circuit.
- Dark Sky Sanctuary – The park is part of the Wairarapa Dark Sky Reserve, offering incredible stargazing. Join a guided night tour or simply look up on a clear night.
Suggested Time to Spend
For a fulfilling visit, plan at least two to three days. Spend the first day exploring the Lake Rotoiti area, including the Mount Robert Circuit or a shorter lakeside walk. Dedicate the second day to a tramp to Angelus Hut or a kayak on Lake Rotoroa. If you have a third day, consider a segment of the Travers-Sabine Circuit or simply relax and enjoy the park's tranquility. The park is also a great stop for a night on a South Island road trip.
