Nazaré is a classic Portuguese fishing town that has become world-famous for its monstrous winter waves, drawing big-wave surfers and spectators from across the globe. Perched on dramatic cliffs, the town offers a blend of authentic coastal culture, thrilling ocean spectacles, and a relaxed beach vibe. Whether you’re here to watch the giants at Praia do Norte or explore the old town’s narrow streets, Nazaré delivers an unforgettable slice of Atlantic life.
Highlights & What to See
- Praia do Norte & the Nazaré Canyon – Witness the colossal waves that can reach over 30 metres, especially from October to February. The best viewpoint is from the Fort of São Miguel Arcanjo, which also houses a small surf museum.
- Sítio & the Elevador – Ride the funicular up to the Sítio district, a historic neighbourhood with sweeping views over the town and ocean. Visit the 17th-century Hermitage of Our Lady of Nazaré.
- Nazaré Beach (Praia da Nazaré) – The main beach is perfect for sunbathing, swimming, and enjoying the lively promenade lined with seafood restaurants.
- Local seafood & dried fish – Sample the catch of the day, especially grilled sardines and the famous caldeirada (fish stew). The peixe seco (dried fish) stalls are a unique local tradition.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors find that one full day is enough to take in the main sights: ride the funicular to Sítio, watch the surfers at Praia do Norte, and stroll the beachfront. If you’re a surfer or want to explore the surrounding cliffs and trails, allow two days. Nazaré is compact and walkable, so you can easily combine it with a morning in the old town and an afternoon at the beach.
