Rising from the golden sands of Western Australia's Coral Coast like a lunar landscape, Nambung National Park is home to the otherworldly Pinnacles Desert. Thousands of limestone pillars, some towering several metres high, create a surreal backdrop that shifts in colour with the changing light. This is a place where nature's artistry takes centre stage, offering a truly unique Australian outback experience.
Highlights & What to See
- The Pinnacles Desert: Wander among the ancient limestone formations on a short walk or drive the 4km Pinnacles Desert Drive loop. Dawn and dusk cast magical shadows and enhance the golden hues.
- Pinnacles Desert Discovery Centre: Learn about the geology, Aboriginal heritage, and wildlife of the park through interactive displays and a short film.
- Lake Thetis: Just outside the park, this saline lake is home to living marine stromatolites – some of the oldest life forms on Earth. A boardwalk makes for easy viewing.
- Hangover Bay: A pristine white-sand beach perfect for a picnic, swimming, or spotting dolphins and sea lions offshore.
- Wildflowers: In spring (August to October), the park bursts into colour with everlastings, orchids, and other native blooms.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend 2–3 hours exploring the Pinnacles Desert loop and the Discovery Centre. However, to fully appreciate the park – including a beach stop, a walk among the pinnacles, and sunset photography – plan for a half-day. If you're keen on stargazing (the park is a Dark Sky Reserve), consider arriving late afternoon and staying until after dark.
