Jutting into the Pacific at Coffs Harbour, Muttonbird Island is a dramatic headland connected to the mainland by a narrow causeway. This windswept nature reserve is a sanctuary for thousands of wedge-tailed shearwaters (muttonbirds) that nest here from August to April. Walking the loop track offers sweeping coastal views, whale-watching opportunities in season, and a fascinating glimpse into the seabirds' daily life. It's a raw, wild slice of nature just steps from the city.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Allocate 1–2 hours for the walk and birdwatching. Sunset is the magical time to visit, as thousands of shearwaters return to their burrows. If you're keen on photography or whale-watching, plan for an extra 30 minutes. The walk is flat and suitable for most fitness levels, but there's little shade, so bring a hat and water.
