Perched dramatically on a rocky outcrop at the edge of Niterói, the Museu de Arte Contemporânea (MAC) is a futuristic flying-saucer-like structure that has become an icon of Brazilian modernism. Designed by Oscar Niemeyer and completed in 1996, the museum offers breathtaking 360-degree views of Guanabara Bay, Rio de Janeiro’s skyline, and Sugarloaf Mountain. Inside, the collection focuses on contemporary Brazilian art, with rotating exhibitions that showcase the country’s vibrant creative scene. The building itself is a masterpiece—a 16-metre-high concrete dome with a reflecting pool, reached by a sinuous ramp that feels like an architectural promenade.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Most visitors spend about 1–2 hours exploring the museum and its grounds. If you’re an art enthusiast, allow extra time for the exhibitions and a leisurely coffee at the café with a view. Combine with a stroll along Niterói’s waterfront or a visit to the nearby Parque da Cidade for a half-day outing from Rio.
