Stretching roughly 100 kilometres through the lush green countryside of north-east Victoria, the Murray to Mountains Rail Trail is one of Australia’s finest rail-trail experiences. Following the route of a former railway line, this sealed, mostly flat path winds through vineyards, dairy farms, and historic gold-rush towns, with ever-present views of the snow-capped peaks of the Victorian Alps. Whether you’re on two wheels or on foot, the trail offers an immersive way to explore the region’s food and wine scene, its pioneer heritage, and its spectacular natural beauty.
Highlights & What to See
- Bright – The unofficial capital of the trail, Bright is a charming alpine town known for its autumn colours, craft breweries, and excellent cafés. The Bright Brewery is a must-stop for a post-ride ale.
- Beechworth – A beautifully preserved gold-rush town with honey-coloured buildings, the historic Beechworth Gaol, and the famous Beechworth Bakery. Allow time to wander the main street and sample the local honey.
- Milawa – The heart of the King Valley wine region, Milawa is home to Brown Brothers winery and the Milawa Cheese Factory. A perfect spot for a gourmet lunch.
- Wangaratta – The southern terminus of the trail, Wangaratta offers the excellent Wangaratta Art Gallery and the nearby Warby Ovens National Park for bushwalking.
- Rutherglen – Accessible via a spur trail, Rutherglen is renowned for its fortified wines and historic cellars. Don’t miss a tasting at Stanton & Killeen or Campbells.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most cyclists take three to four days to ride the entire trail, staying overnight in towns like Bright, Beechworth, and Wangaratta. This allows time to explore each settlement and sample the local produce. If you’re short on time, the Bright to Beechworth section (about 38 km) makes an excellent day ride, with plenty of cafés and wineries along the way. Walkers can easily tackle shorter sections; the flat, sealed surface makes it accessible for families and less experienced riders. Many visitors combine a ride with a self-drive itinerary, using the trail as a scenic link between towns.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Mount Buffalo National Park – Just south of Bright, this granite plateau offers dramatic views, waterfalls, and excellent hiking, including the walk to The Horn.
- Alpine National Park – For a taste of the High Country, drive to Falls Creek or Mount Hotham for alpine walks and wildflowers in summer.
- King Valley – Extend your wine tour beyond Milawa to the King Valley’s Italian-inspired wineries, such as Pizzini and Dal Zotto.
- Chiltern – A historic gold-mining town with well-preserved 19th-century buildings and the Chiltern-Mt Pilot National Park.
- Wodonga & Albury – The twin cities on the Murray River offer riverfront walks, museums, and the Murray Art Museum Albury (MAMA).
