Murray Sunset Region

Stretching across the far north-western corner of Victoria, the Murray Sunset Region is a vast, semi-arid landscape of red sand dunes, salt lakes, and ancient river red gums. This is the state’s most remote and least visited corner, offering a true outback experience with spectacular sunsets, abundant birdlife, and a profound sense of solitude. The region is dominated by the Murray-Sunset National Park, a protected area larger than some countries, where you can drive for hours without seeing another soul. It’s a place for self-sufficient travellers who relish raw, unfiltered nature.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Give yourself at least two full days to explore the national park and its highlights. A long weekend allows you to drive the main tracks, walk to the Pink Lakes, and spend a night camping under the stars. If you’re combining it with the Murray River, add an extra day for a river cruise or fishing. The region is best visited in spring (September–November) or autumn (March–May) when temperatures are mild; summer can be scorching.
