Ouyen is a classic Mallee wheat-belt town that feels like a genuine slice of outback Victoria. With its wide, sun-bleached main street and a palpable sense of isolation, it serves as the gateway to the remote Murray-Sunset National Park and the legendary Pink Lakes. This is a place where the silence is profound and the night sky puts on a show you won't forget.
Highlights & What to See
- Murray-Sunset National Park – The big draw. Drive the rough tracks to see the surreal, salt-crusted Pink Lakes (Lake Crosbie, Lake Becking, and Lake Kenyon), best at sunrise or sunset when the colours are most intense. Keep an eye out for emus and kangaroos.
- Pink Lakes – These shallow, hypersaline lakes turn a vivid bubblegum pink thanks to algae and bacteria. A boardwalk at Lake Crosbie makes for easy photography.
- Ouyen Silo Art – A massive mural of a Mallee farmer and his dog on the grain silos, painted by artist Guido van Helten. It’s a striking roadside attraction and a nod to the town’s agricultural heart.
- Sculpture on the Silo Trail – Part of a broader network of silo art across the region; Ouyen’s is one of the most photogenic.
- Mallee Visitor Information Centre – Stop in for maps, local tips, and a chat with the friendly volunteers who know the back roads.
- Sunset Strip Lookout – A short walk from town offers panoramic views over the flat Mallee plains – perfect for golden hour.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most travellers pass through on a day trip from Mildura or Swan Hill, but to truly soak up the outback atmosphere and explore the national park, plan for an overnight stay. One full day gives you time to visit the Pink Lakes, see the silo art, and take a sunset drive. If you’re camping, two days let you hike a section of the Mallee Track and stargaze without light pollution.
