Deep in the Atherton Tablelands, Mount Hypipamee National Park is a pocket of ancient rainforest that feels worlds away from the coastal crowds. The star attraction is a dramatic volcanic pipe — a sheer, 80-metre-deep crater known as The Crater, ringed by towering kauri pines and tree ferns. This is a place for quiet immersion: the air is cool and damp, the only sounds are birdsong and the rustle of leaves, and the walking trails lead you through some of Queensland’s most pristine upland rainforest.
Highlights & What to See
- The Crater: A 200-metre-wide volcanic pipe now filled with a deep, green-tinged lake. Peer over the lookout railing — the drop is dizzying, and the sense of geological time is palpable.
- Crater Track: An easy 1.2 km loop (return) that winds through mossy, fern-filled rainforest to the crater lookout. Perfect for a short, atmospheric walk.
- Mount Hypipamee summit: For those with a bit more energy, the 3.2 km (return) summit track climbs through cloud forest to the peak, rewarding you with panoramic views over the tablelands.
- Birdwatching: Listen for the whip-crack call of the eastern whipbird, and keep your eyes peeled for the vibrant paradise riflebird and noisy pitta flitting through the understory.
Suggested Time to Spend
Half a day is ample to explore the main crater walk and summit track at a leisurely pace. If you’re combining with nearby waterfalls or a picnic, plan for 3–4 hours. Most visitors arrive mid-morning, so consider an early start to have the trails almost to yourself.
