Mount Hypipamee Crater
Deep in the heart of the Atherton Tablelands, Mount Hypipamee Crater is a startling geological oddity—a sheer-sided volcanic pipe that plunges 70 metres into the rainforest. Unlike the broad volcanic cones you might expect, this narrow, near-vertical shaft was created by a massive gas explosion, leaving a dark, brooding hole filled with a lake the colour of ink. It's one of those rare places where the raw power of the earth feels immediate and eerie, especially when the mist rolls in over the surrounding cloud forest.
Highlights & What to See
- The Crater Lookout – A fenced platform gives you vertiginous views straight down into the crater lake. Peer over the edge and watch the trees clinging to the sheer walls; on quiet days you might hear the distant call of a tooth-billed bowerbird echoing up from the depths.
- Crater Walk Circuit – A short, well-maintained boardwalk (about 1 km loop) winds through ancient cycads, strangler figs and giant tree ferns. Keep an eye out for musky rat-kangaroos and the brilliant blue of a Ulysses butterfly.
- Dinner Falls – Just a few minutes' drive from the crater carpark, a short track leads to a series of cascades on the Barron River. The plunge pool is inviting on a hot day, but the rocks can be slippery—take care.
- Birdwatching – The surrounding rainforest is a hotspot for endemic species: listen for the whip-crack call of the eastern whipbird and scan the canopy for the golden bowerbird, whose elaborate bowers are a marvel of avian architecture.
Suggested Time to Spend
You can do justice to the crater and the Dinner Falls in about 1.5 to 2 hours, but birders and photographers should budget at least half a day. The site is small but atmospheric, so it's best visited as a stop on a larger Atherton Tablelands circuit. Arrive early in the morning (before 9 am) to experience the crater in the soft, filtered light and to have the boardwalk nearly to yourself.
