Mount Fox
Mount Fox, a dormant volcano in northern Queensland's remote savannah, offers a rugged escape for adventurous travellers. This 900-metre-high peak, last active over 100,000 years ago, rewards hikers with sweeping views of the surrounding dry tropics and the distant Coral Sea. It's a place that feels off the beaten track, where the quiet hum of cicadas and the crackle of dry grass underfoot replace the noise of city life.
Highlights & What to See
- Summit Hike: A steep 3.5 km return trail through open eucalypt forest leads to the rim of the volcanic crater. The top offers panoramic views over the Herbert River valley and, on clear days, out to Hinchinbrook Island.
- Volcanic Crater: The well-preserved crater is a textbook example of a volcanic cone. Look for basalt boulders and scoria scattered around the rim – evidence of its fiery past.
- Birdwatching: Keep an eye out for rainbow bee-eaters, red-tailed black cockatoos and wedge-tailed eagles soaring overhead. The dry woodland is also home to wallabies and goannas.
- Wildflowers (June–September): During the dry season, the slopes burst into colour with native grevilleas, wattles and orchids, making for a vibrant contrast against the grey-green bush.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors tackle the summit walk in half a day (allow 2–3 hours return), leaving time to explore the base or enjoy a picnic. If you're combining it with a broader drive through the region, a morning or afternoon stop is sufficient. For keen hikers or photographers, consider spending a full day to soak in the changing light and peaceful atmosphere.
