Rising 287 metres above Brisbane, Mount Coot-tha offers the city's best panoramic views, from the CBD skyline to the distant Glass House Mountains. This leafy reserve is a favourite for both locals and travellers seeking a quick nature fix without leaving the urban fringe. Its name comes from the Aboriginal word 'kuta' meaning 'place of wild honey', and today it's a sweet spot for bushwalks, botanic gardens, and sunset picnics.
Highlights & What to See
- Summit Lookout – The star attraction, with sweeping views over Brisbane and beyond. Arrive late afternoon for golden light and city lights twinkling at dusk.
- Brisbane Botanic Gardens Mount Coot-tha – Sprawling 52-hectare gardens with themed sections including a Japanese garden, arid zone, and tropical dome. The fragrant herb garden is a sensory delight.
- Mount Coot-tha Walking Trails – Over 20 km of trails wind through eucalypt forest. The Summit Track (1.5 km one way) is a popular, moderately steep climb from the carpark to the lookout.
- Sir Thomas Brisbane Planetarium – Queensland's largest planetarium, offering immersive cosmic shows and a free observatory with weekend night viewings.
- Mount Coot-tha Cafe & Restaurant – The Summit Restaurant serves modern Australian cuisine with a view, while the Kuta Cafe is perfect for a casual coffee and scone on the deck.
Suggested Time to Spend
Half a day is ideal to soak up the main attractions. Start with a morning stroll through the botanic gardens (2–3 hours), then drive up to the lookout for lunch at the cafe. Add an hour for a short walk on the Summit Track or a planetarium show. If you're keen on longer hikes, allow a full day to explore the network of trails. Sunset is the most magical time to be at the lookout, so plan to linger.
