Rising to 2,276 metres, Mount Batukaru (Gunung Batukaru) is Bali's second-highest peak and the centrepiece of the island's wild, misty west. Unlike the crowded trails of Mount Batur, Batukaru offers a deeply immersive trek through dense tropical rainforest, past coffee plantations and ancient temples, culminating in a summit often wrapped in cloud. It's a place for travellers seeking solitude, cool air, and a genuine connection with Bali's spiritual landscape.
Highlights & What to See
- Trek to the summit: The main draw is a challenging 6-8 hour round-trip hike through mossy forest, with the summit offering panoramic views over Bali's central mountains and, on clear days, the north coast. Guides are essential as the trail can be muddy and poorly marked.
- Pura Luhur Batukaru: This ancient temple complex, set in a forest clearing at the foot of the mountain, is one of Bali's most important and serene temples. Its multi-tiered shrines and cool, mossy atmosphere make it a highlight even if you don't hike.
- Jatiluwih Rice Terraces: A UNESCO World Heritage site just southeast of Batukaru, these sweeping, emerald-green rice terraces are a photographer's dream. Drive or cycle through them early morning to avoid crowds.
- Bali Botanic Garden (Kebun Raya Bali): Located on the mountain's southern slopes, this sprawling botanical garden showcases Bali's flora, with a huge collection of orchids, a fern garden, and walking trails through the forest.
- Bedugul & Lake Bratan: A short drive east, the cool highland town of Bedugul is home to the iconic Pura Ulun Danu Bratan temple, floating on Lake Bratan. Combine it with a visit to the local fruit and flower market.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors dedicate a full day to the Mount Batukaru area. If you're keen on the summit trek, start early (around 6am) from the Pura Luhur Batukaru trailhead; the hike takes 4-5 hours up and 2-3 down. Afternoon is perfect for exploring the temple and a leisurely drive through the Jatiluwih terraces. For a deeper experience, stay overnight in a homestay or eco-lodge near the mountain to enjoy the cool evening air and a pre-dawn start.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Ubud: About 90 minutes east, Bali's cultural heart is a natural base for exploring the central highlands. Combine Batukaru with Ubud's art scene, rice terraces, and yoga studios.
- Pupuan: A charming village on the mountain's northern slopes, known for its coffee and clove plantations. The drive over the Batukaru pass to Pupuan offers stunning views.
- Munduk: A serene hill station north of Batukaru, famous for its waterfalls (Munduk Waterfall, Melanting Waterfall) and hiking trails through coffee groves. Ideal for a multi-day trekking itinerary.
- West Bali National Park: A 2-hour drive northwest, this park offers a completely different ecosystem – dry savannah and coral reefs. Spot deer, monkeys, and birds on a day trip.
