Mount Ainslie is the quintessential Canberra lookout, offering a panoramic view that instantly orients you to the city's design. This 843-metre peak, part of the Canberra Nature Park, is a favourite for both early-morning joggers and sunset seekers. The short but steep drive or walk to the summit rewards you with a sweeping vista of Lake Burley Griffin, Parliament House, and the symmetrical layout dreamed up by Walter Burley Griffin. It's a free, accessible dose of nature and urban planning in one.
Highlights & What to See
- Summit Lookout – The main event: a 360-degree view over Canberra’s landmark buildings, the lake, and the distant Brindabella Ranges. Come at dawn or dusk for the best light.
- Mount Ainslie Trail – A 3.2 km walking and cycling track from the base near the Australian War Memorial to the top. It’s a steady climb through bushland alive with kangaroos and birdlife.
- Aboriginal Rock Art – Near the summit, keep an eye out for a small shelter with ochre paintings, a reminder that this area is Ngunnawal Country.
- Flora and Fauna – Spot yellow box–red gum grassy woodland, rosellas, and the occasional echidna. The trail is a nature lover’s quick escape.
Suggested Time to Spend
Allow 30 minutes for a quick drive-up and photo stop. If you’re keen to walk, budget 1.5–2 hours round-trip from the War Memorial car park. The trail is doable year-round, but mornings are cooler and less crowded. Combine it with a visit to the War Memorial for a half-day of Canberra’s commemorative landscape.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Australian War Memorial – Just at the base of the trail; Australia’s national memorial to its armed forces is a moving, world-class museum.
- Lake Burley Griffin – A short drive away, perfect for a stroll, bike ride, or paddleboat hire around the central basin.
- Parliament House – Drive to the top of Capital Hill for a different perspective and a look inside the democratic heart of the country.
- Mount Majura – Another nearby peak with trails and views, less crowded than Mount Ainslie.
- National Arboretum Canberra – A sprawling collection of forests from around the world, with excellent walking trails and a café.
