Just east of Bundaberg, Mon Repos is one of the most significant marine turtle rookeries in the South Pacific. Each year from November to March, loggerhead, flatback, green, and occasionally leatherback turtles haul themselves onto this protected beach to nest. The Mon Repos Turtle Centre, run by Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service, offers guided evening tours during nesting and hatching season, where you can witness these ancient creatures lay eggs or watch tiny hatchlings scramble to the sea. It’s a profoundly moving wildlife encounter that feels like stepping back into the age of dinosaurs.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Plan for a full evening at Mon Repos if you’re doing the turtle tour (usually 2–3 hours). Combine this with a daytime visit to the Turtle Centre (allow 1 hour) and perhaps a morning or afternoon at the beach. Most visitors base themselves in Bundaberg and drive the 15 km to Mon Repos, making it easy to fit into a day trip. For the full experience, consider staying overnight in Bundaberg so you can do the evening turtle tour without rushing.
