Mon Repos Turtle Hatchery

Just east of Bundaberg, Mon Repos Turtle Hatchery is one of the most significant marine turtle rookeries in the South Pacific. Each summer, endangered loggerhead, green, and flatback turtles haul themselves up the same beaches where they were hatched to lay their eggs. For travellers, it offers a rare, front-row seat to an ancient life cycle — a humbling wildlife encounter that feels both intimate and epic.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Plan for a full evening if you’re doing a guided turtle tour (tours run from about 7 pm to midnight, depending on tides). Arrive early to explore the Turtle Centre. If you’re not visiting during nesting season, half a day is enough for the centre and a beach walk. Most visitors combine Mon Repos with a day or two in the Bundaberg region.
