Mon Repos, on the coast just east of Bundaberg, is one of Australia’s most important sea turtle rookeries. From November to March each year, loggerhead, flatback, green and occasionally hawksbill turtles lumber ashore to lay eggs under the cover of darkness. The guided night tours are an unforgettable wildlife experience, and the adjacent Mon Repos Conservation Park offers coastal walks and a pristine beach for daytime exploration.
Highlights & What to See
- Sea Turtle Nesting Tours (Nov–Mar): Join a ranger-led evening tour to watch a female turtle dig her nest and lay eggs, or later in the season see hatchlings scramble to the sea.
- Mon Repos Turtle Centre: An interactive interpretive centre with a life-sized turtle model, aquariums and exhibits on turtle biology and conservation.
- Mon Repos Beach: A beautiful, undeveloped beach perfect for a daytime stroll or picnic – but swimming is not recommended due to strong currents and marine stingers.
- Coastal Walk: A short boardwalk through coastal scrub to a viewing platform overlooking the beach and ocean.
- Nearby Barolin Rocks: A rocky headland south of the beach offering rock pools and good fishing.
Suggested Time to Spend
Plan for at least 3–4 hours if you're doing a turtle tour (arrive 1 hour before the tour starts to visit the centre). Daytime visits for the beach and walk need only 1–2 hours. The turtle tours run every evening during the season, so you can easily combine Mon Repos with a day exploring Bundaberg or the Southern Great Barrier Reef islands.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining

- Bargara – a laid-back beachside town with cafés, a golf course and the Turtle Sands resort.
- Bundaberg Rum Distillery – take a tour and tasting at Queensland’s iconic rum producer.
- Lady Elliot Island – a day trip by flight or boat from Bundaberg for snorkelling with manta rays and turtles on the southern Great Barrier Reef.
- Woodgate Beach – a quieter beach town north of Bundaberg with a long sandy shore and national park.
