Plunging 18 metres into a perfect, deep swimming hole framed by lush rainforest, Millaa Millaa Falls is the poster child of the Atherton Tablelands. This iconic waterfall, with its wide curtain of water and rocky ledge, is one of the most photographed in Australia. It's a quintessential stop on the Waterfall Circuit, offering a refreshing dip and a classic tropical North Queensland experience.
Highlights & What to See
- Swim in the plunge pool: The cool, clear water is irresistible on a warm day. The pool is deep enough for swimming, and the cascade creates a natural shower.
- Photograph the falls: The wide, even flow and the surrounding green canopy make for stunning photos. Visit in the morning for soft light and fewer crowds.
- Walk the short trail: A 600-metre wheelchair-accessible path leads from the car park to the base of the falls, passing through beautiful rainforest with ferns and towering trees.
- Combine with the Waterfall Circuit: Millaa Millaa is the star of this 32-kilometre loop that also includes Zillie Falls and Ellinjaa Falls. Allow a couple of hours to visit all three.
- Picnic by the creek: There are grassy areas near the car park with tables and barbecues, perfect for a lunch stop amid the sounds of the forest.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend 30 minutes to an hour at Millaa Millaa Falls, enough time for a swim, photos, and a short walk. If you're doing the full Waterfall Circuit, plan for 2–3 hours total. For a leisurely visit, combine it with a picnic and a longer swim—allow up to 1.5 hours here. The falls are easily accessible, so you can fit them into a half-day trip from Cairns or a day exploring the Tablelands.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Zillie Falls and Ellinjaa Falls: The other two main waterfalls on the circuit, each with its own character—Zillie is wide and powerful, Ellinjaa is a gentle cascade with a swimming hole.
- Lake Eacham and Lake Barrine: Volcanic crater lakes with walking tracks, swimming, and picnic spots, about 20 minutes south of Millaa Millaa.
- Yungaburra: A charming historic village with galleries, cafes, and the famous Curtain Fig Tree, a massive strangler fig.
- Malanda: Home to the Malanda Falls and a visitor centre with info on the Tablelands' natural history.
- Atherton: The main hub of the Tablelands, with markets, the Crystal Caves, and access to the historic Herberton Historic Village.
