Mid Levels Escalators
Rising above the dense streets of Sheung Wan and Central, the Mid Levels Escalators are the world’s longest outdoor covered escalator system—a quirky, practical, and utterly fascinating way to explore Hong Kong Island. This 800-metre-long snake of moving staircases was built to connect the hilly Mid Levels residential district with the city’s commercial heart, but it has become a tourist attraction in its own right. Riding the escalators is like a slow-motion tour through a living neighbourhood: you glide past tiny antique shops, sizzling dai pai dong (open-air food stalls), hipster cafés, and historic temples. The system reverses direction during peak hours—downhill in the morning, uphill from 10am—so time your ride to catch the city waking up.
Highlights & What to See
- Ride the entire length – Start at the bottom on Central Market and ride up to Conduit Road, watching the cityscape transform from glass-and-steel towers to leafy residential lanes.
- SoHo dining and drinking – Hop off around Staunton Street and Elgin Street, where SoHo’s buzzing restaurant scene spills onto the pavement. Try a craft beer bar or a hole-in-the-wall dim sum joint.
- Man Mo Temple – A short walk from the escalators on Hollywood Road, this incense-heavy 19th-century temple is a fragrant, photogenic slice of old Hong Kong.
- Cat Street Market – On Upper Lascar Row, this open-air bazaar is a treasure trove of vintage Mao badges, jade trinkets, and retro posters.
- PMQ – A former police married quarters turned creative hub, with design boutiques, galleries, and a rooftop garden—perfect for a coffee break.
Suggested Time to Spend
Allocate 2–3 hours for a leisurely ride with stops. Start around 11am when the escalators run uphill, and plan to explore SoHo for lunch. If you’re short on time, a one-way trip (without getting off) takes about 20 minutes, but you’ll miss the best bits. Combine with a morning at the nearby Hong Kong Park or a dim sum brunch in Central for a full half-day outing.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Central – The financial district’s sleek skyscrapers and historic tram lines are a five-minute walk from the escalators’ base.
- Sheung Wan – West of the escalators, this older neighbourhood is packed with dried-seafood shops, traditional tea houses, and the excellent Sheung Wan Market.
- Hong Kong Park – A green oasis with a walk-in aviary and a museum of tea ware, just a 15-minute stroll through the city.
- Peak Tram & Victoria Peak – Take the tram from the lower terminus (a 10-minute walk) for sweeping views over the harbour and islands.
- Lan Kwai Fong – Hong Kong’s nightlife epicentre is a short downhill walk from the SoHo section of the escalators.
