Menjangan Island
Menjangan Island, part of Bali Barat National Park, is a pristine coral-fringed islet off Bali's northwest coast. Its name means 'deer' in Indonesian, referencing the shy Javan rusa deer that swim across from the mainland. This protected marine reserve offers some of Bali's best snorkeling and diving, with crystalline waters, vibrant coral gardens, and a peaceful, undeveloped atmosphere far from the island's crowded south.
Highlights & What to See
- Snorkeling and diving at the coral drop-offs: The island's fringing reef drops dramatically into deep blue water, creating walls adorned with soft corals, sea fans, and abundant marine life including reef sharks, turtles, and schools of tropical fish.
- The underwater temple gate (Pura Gili Kencana): A unique submerged Hindu shrine at about 5 meters depth, offering a surreal photo opportunity and a glimpse into local spiritual traditions.
- Menjangan's white sand beaches: Several pristine beaches on the island's eastern side, such as Pasir Putih, are perfect for swimming and sunbathing in solitude.
- Javan rusa deer sightings: Keep an eye out for deer swimming between the island and mainland, or grazing on the island's grassy areas.
- Birdwatching and mangrove forests: The island and surrounding national park host diverse bird species, including kingfishers and herons, best explored by kayak through the mangroves.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors allocate a full day to Menjangan Island, departing early from the mainland (typically from Labuan Lalang or Banyuwedang) and returning by late afternoon. A half-day trip can work if you're short on time, but you'll miss the chance to explore multiple snorkel sites and relax on the beaches. For divers, consider two days to experience the different wall dives and the quieter morning conditions.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Bali Barat National Park: The park's mainland section offers hiking trails through monsoon forest, birdwatching (including the endemic Bali starling), and the chance to see wild deer and monkeys.
- Pemuteran: A laid-back coastal village with black sand beaches, excellent diving, and the famous bio-rock coral restoration project just a short drive from the Menjangan boat departure points.
- Lovina Beach: Known for its calm waters and dolphin-watching tours at dawn, this north-coast town is about an hour east and makes a good base for exploring the region.
- Gilimanuk: The ferry port at Bali's western tip, near the national park entrance, with a small market and access to the ferry to Java.
- Medewi Beach: A surf spot on the southwest coast with a long left-hand break, ideal for intermediate surfers, and a quieter alternative to more famous breaks.
