Mataranka
Mataranka, a tiny outback town in the Northern Territory's Top End, is famous for its crystal-clear thermal springs and the lush palm-fringed waterholes of Elsey National Park. It's a serene oasis that feels worlds away from the red dust of the Stuart Highway, offering a quintessential Aussie swimming experience in warm, mineral-rich waters. The town is steeped in the lore of the 'Never Never' from Jeannie Gunn's classic novel We of the Never Never, and its relaxed pace makes it an ideal stopover on the drive between Katherine and Tennant Creek.
Highlights & What to See
- Bitter Springs: Float effortlessly in this crystal-clear, 34°C thermal spring surrounded by paperbark trees. It's the quintessential Mataranka experience – bring a noodle and drift with the gentle current.
- Mataranka Thermal Pool: A larger, more developed spring with a sandy bottom and changing facilities. Perfect for a longer soak and picnicking under the shady pandanus palms.
- Elsey National Park: Beyond the springs, explore short walking trails through monsoon forest and along the Roper River. Keep an eye out for agile wallabies and rainbow bee-eaters.
- Mataranka Homestead & Never Never Museum: Step into the outback history of the region, with exhibits on the original pastoral station and the inspiration for We of the Never Never.
- Jalmurark (Rainbow Spring): A quieter, more remote thermal spring within the national park – a 4WD is recommended for access, but the solitude is worth it.
Suggested Time to Spend
Mataranka is best savoured as a half-day to full-day stopover. If you're driving the Stuart Highway, plan to arrive by late morning, spend a couple of hours soaking in Bitter Springs and the Thermal Pool, then enjoy a picnic lunch. For a more relaxed pace, overnight at the Mataranka Homestead or one of the nearby caravan parks – you'll have the springs almost to yourself in the early morning or late afternoon. Two days allows you to explore the walking trails and the quieter Jalmurark spring.
