Mamu Barrk Marlam Walk
Winding through the dense, ancient rainforest of Wooroonooran National Park, the Mamu Barrk Marlam Walk is a spellbinding journey into one of Australia's most biodiverse landscapes. This 6.5 km return trail, also known as the 'Forest of Giants,' takes you past towering bull kauri pines, cascading creeks, and the thunderous Nandroya Falls. It's a walk that feels like stepping back in time, where the air is thick with humidity and the sound of birdsong echoes through the canopy.
Highlights & What to See
- Nandroya Falls: A spectacular multi-tiered waterfall that plunges into a deep, cool pool — perfect for a refreshing dip after the walk.
- Bull Kauri Pines: These colossal trees, some over 50 metres tall, are among the largest in the world. The boardwalk section allows you to walk right among them.
- Rainforest Ecology: Spot vibrant butterflies, musky rat-kangaroos, and the elusive cassowary if you're lucky. The interpretive signs provide fascinating insights into the forest's complex web of life.
- Mamu Canopy Walkway: A short detour leads to a suspended bridge that offers a bird's-eye view of the rainforest canopy — a photographer's dream.
- Stream Crossings: The trail crosses several crystal-clear creeks, where you can pause to listen to the gentle flow and cool your feet.
Suggested Time to Spend
Allocate at least 3 to 4 hours for the full return walk, including time to swim at the falls and explore the canopy walkway. Start early in the morning to avoid the midday heat and to catch the best light for photography. If you're a keen birder or botanist, you could easily spend half a day here, so pack a picnic and take your time.
