Malapascua is a tiny island off the northern tip of Cebu, famed as one of the best places on Earth to dive with thresher sharks. Beyond the shark action, this laid-back paradise offers white-sand beaches, a sleepy village atmosphere, and a chance to experience authentic island life away from the crowds. The main draw is underwater, but the island's simplicity and friendly locals make it a perfect spot to unwind for a few days.
Highlights & What to See
- Dive with Thresher Sharks at Monad Shoal – A dawn dive at this sunken island is the main event; watch these graceful sharks being cleaned by wrasses in the early morning light.
- Gato Island – A marine reserve and sea snake sanctuary, this island offers a thrilling drift dive through a cave, with whitetip reef sharks and vibrant macro life.
- Bounty Beach – The island's main beach, lined with casual resorts and bars; perfect for sunset strolls, kayaking, or just lazing in a hammock.
- Malapascua Lighthouse – A short hike up to the island's highest point rewards you with panoramic views of the surrounding sea and nearby islands.
- Sandira Beach – Quieter and more secluded than Bounty Beach, this stretch of powdery sand is ideal for a peaceful swim or picnic.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors stay 3–4 days, which allows for two or three dives (including the thresher shark dive), a trip to Gato Island, and plenty of beach time. If you're not diving, 2–3 days is enough to explore the island on foot, relax, and take a boat tour to nearby islets. The island is small enough to walk around in a couple of hours, but the slow pace encourages lingering.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
