Ma On Shan Country Trail is a rugged, rewarding hike that cuts across the spine of Hong Kong’s New Territories, offering panoramic views of Sai Kung’s turquoise bays, Tolo Harbour, and the distant peaks of Pat Sin Leng. This 4.5 km trail, part of the larger Ma On Shan Country Park, is a favourite among seasoned walkers for its dramatic escarpments and the chance to explore a historic iron-mining site. The trail is well-marked but demands a good level of fitness – bring plenty of water and sturdy shoes.
Highlights & What to See
- Ma On Shan Peak (702 m): The summit rewards with 360-degree views of the Sai Kung archipelago, High Island Reservoir, and on clear days, the skyscrapers of Kowloon. The final ascent is a steep scramble over boulders.
- Iron Mine Ruins: Near the trailhead, explore the abandoned adits and rusted machinery of Hong Kong’s last working iron mine, operational until the 1970s. A short side trail leads to a dark, dripping tunnel – bring a torch.
- Pyramid Hill: A distinctive cone-shaped peak en route, offering a less crowded viewpoint with great photo ops of the surrounding ridges.
- MacLehose Trail Section 4 Overlap: The trail shares a stretch with the famous MacLehose Trail, so you’ll see yellow marker posts and a steady stream of experienced hikers.
- Grassland and Shrubland: The upper slopes are covered in low-lying shrubs and grasses, home to butterflies and dragonflies in summer. The contrast of green hills against blue sea is stunning.
Suggested Time to Spend
Allow 3 to 4 hours for the full out-and-back hike from the Ma On Shan Village trailhead to the peak and back. Start early in the morning to avoid the midday heat and catch the best light for photography. The trail is steep in sections, so pace yourself – take breaks at the summit and the mine ruins. If you’re combining with other walks in the area, you can shorten it by turning around at Pyramid Hill (about 2 hours round trip).
