Lombok is Indonesia's serene alternative to Bali, offering dramatic volcanic landscapes, pristine white-sand beaches, and a rich Sasak culture. With the mighty Mount Rinjani as its centrepiece, this island is a paradise for hikers, surfers, and those seeking a slower pace of life. The Gili Islands, just off the northwest coast, provide a classic tropical escape with turquoise waters and no motorised traffic.
Highlights & What to See
- Mount Rinjani – An active volcano and Indonesia's second-highest peak, offering multi-day treks through lush rainforest to a stunning crater lake. Sunrise from the summit is unforgettable.
- Gili Islands (Gili Trawangan, Gili Meno, Gili Air) – Three car-free islands with world-class snorkelling, diving, and laid-back beach bars. Each has a distinct vibe: party on Gili T, honeymoon on Meno, chill on Air.
- Kuta Lombok – A surf hub with a string of spectacular bays (Mawun, Tanjung Aan) and a relaxed bohemian atmosphere. Not to be confused with its Balinese namesake.
- Sasak Traditional Villages – Visit villages like Sade and Ende to see traditional thatched-roof houses and witness daily life of the indigenous Sasak people.
- Pink Beach (Tangsi Beach) – One of only a handful of pink-sand beaches in the world, ideal for a secluded swim and snorkel.
- Sendang Gile & Tiu Kelep Waterfalls – Twin waterfalls near Rinjani's foothills, accessible via a short, scenic hike through jungle.
Suggested Time to Spend
Spend at least 5–7 days to do justice to Lombok's diversity. Dedicate 2–3 days for a Rinjani trek (or a shorter day hike to the waterfalls), 2–3 days island-hopping in the Gilis, and a couple of days exploring the southern beaches and Sasak villages. If you're short on time, prioritise either the Gilis or Rinjani – both require a full day each. Lombok is best experienced at a relaxed pace; avoid rushing between spots.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Bali – A short flight or fast boat away, perfect for adding cultural temples and vibrant nightlife to your trip.
- Nusa Tenggara Islands (Komodo, Flores) – Continue east for dragon-spotting and volcanic landscapes. Direct flights from Lombok to Labuan Bajo.
- Sumbawa – Less developed neighbour with world-class surf breaks and traditional villages. Reachable by ferry from Lombok.
- Gili Islands – Already mentioned, but they truly deserve their own day trips or an overnight stay.
