Little Desert National Park is a surprising pocket of wild, semi-arid landscape in western Victoria, offering a stark beauty that feels a world away from the state's greener corners. Named for its sandy, nutrient-poor soils, this park is actually a rich mosaic of heathlands, woodlands, and mallee scrub, bursting into a spectacular wildflower display in spring. It's a haven for birdwatchers, hikers, and anyone seeking genuine solitude in the Australian bush.
Highlights & What to See
- Wildflowers in Spring: From August to November, the park erupts in a dazzling array of native blooms – grevilleas, orchids, and wattles – making it one of Victoria's best wildflower destinations.
- Birdwatching: Spot over 200 species, including the rare mallee emu-wren and southern scrub-robin. The heathlands and salt lakes are prime birding territory.
- Horseshoe Bend Walk: A 2.5 km loop through river red gums and along the Wimmera River, offering a chance to see kangaroos and echidnas.
- Kowree Farm Forestry & Wildflower Reserve: Just outside the park, this reserve offers more wildflower walks and picnic spots.
- Stargazing: With minimal light pollution, the park is a fantastic spot for night-sky photography and observing the Milky Way.
Suggested Time to Spend
Dedicate at least half a day to explore the park's main drives and a short walk – the 11 km Kiata Scenic Drive is a good introduction. For birdwatchers or wildflower enthusiasts, a full day is ideal. You can easily combine a visit with a stop in the nearby towns of Dimboola or Nhill on a self-drive itinerary along the Western Highway.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Dimboola: A charming town on the Wimmera River, famous for its historic pub and the nearby Pink Lake (a salt lake with pink hues).
- Nhill: Known for its large silo art and as a gateway to the Little Desert, with good cafes and accommodation.
- Wyperfeld National Park: Another semi-arid park north of Little Desert, with vast mallee landscapes and red kangaroos.
- Grampians National Park: About 90 minutes east, the Grampians offer dramatic sandstone ranges, waterfalls, and abundant wildlife.
- Horsham: The regional hub, with the Wimmera River walk, art gallery, and botanic gardens – a good base for exploring the area.
