Lion Rock is a striking granite monolith rising dramatically from the surrounding farmland in the Northern Rivers region of New South Wales. This lesser-known natural wonder offers panoramic views, peaceful walking trails, and a sense of remote discovery that rewards those who venture off the beaten track.
Highlights & What to See
- Summit Views: The short but steep climb to the top of Lion Rock rewards you with sweeping 360-degree views over the Tweed Valley, Mount Warning, and the distant Gold Coast skyline on clear days.
- Granite Outcrops: The rock itself is a fascinating geological feature, with weathered granite boulders and unique rock formations that make for great photo opportunities.
- Wildflowers & Birdlife: In spring, the surrounding bushland bursts into colour with native wildflowers, while the area is home to a variety of bird species, including raptors that soar overhead.
- Sunrise or Sunset: Time your visit for early morning or late afternoon to catch the rock bathed in golden light and avoid the heat of the day.
Suggested Time to Spend
Allow around 1 to 2 hours for the walk to the summit and back, plus extra time to sit and soak in the views. The track is short but moderately steep in sections, so wear sturdy shoes and bring water. If you're a keen photographer or nature lover, you might want to spend a bit longer exploring the base of the rock and the surrounding bushland.
