Lindis Pass

Lindis Pass is a dramatic alpine crossing on State Highway 8 between the towns of Tarras and Omarama in the South Island. The road climbs to 971 metres, offering sweeping views of golden tussock-covered hills and rugged mountain peaks. This is classic high-country New Zealand – exposed, windswept and breathtakingly beautiful. The pass is particularly photogenic in autumn when the tussock turns a deep amber, and in winter when snow dusts the peaks.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Lindis Pass is a drive-through destination – allow 20–30 minutes for photo stops at the summit. Most travellers combine it with a journey between Wanaka and the Mackenzie Basin. If you’re not in a hurry, budget an extra hour to explore the short side roads or simply sit and absorb the silence. The pass is at its best in late afternoon light.
