Lennard Gorge is a dramatic sandstone chasm in the remote Napier Range of Western Australia's Kimberley region. Carved by the Lennard River over millions of years, this narrow gorge plunges 90 metres to a permanent pool below. The walk to the lookout offers sweeping views across the rugged landscape, while the descent to the gorge floor reveals ancient rock formations and a cool, shady oasis. It's a must-see for self-drive adventurers exploring the Gibb River Road.
Highlights & What to See
- Gorge Lookout: A short, steep walk leads to a breathtaking viewpoint over the sheer cliffs and the pool far below. The contrast of red rock, green vegetation and blue water is stunning.
- Gorge Floor Descent: For fit hikers, a rough track descends into the gorge. The reward is a swim in the deep, cool waterhole surrounded by ancient rock walls.
- Wildlife Spotting: Keep an eye out for wallabies, rock pigeons and, in the wet season, freshwater crocodiles basking on rocks.
- Photography Opportunities: The play of light on the gorge walls, especially in the late afternoon, creates incredible photo ops. Bring a wide-angle lens.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend 1–2 hours at Lennard Gorge. The walk to the lookout takes about 20 minutes return, while the scramble to the gorge floor adds another 30–45 minutes. It's best visited in the morning when the light is softer and temperatures are cooler. Combine with a stop at Tunnel Creek or Windjana Gorge for a full day exploring the Napier Range.
