Lantau Island is Hong Kong’s largest and most rugged island, a world away from the city’s skyscrapers. Its western fishing village, Tai O, is a living museum of stilt houses, narrow waterways, and a traditional way of life that has remained largely unchanged for centuries. Here you can wander past dried-seafood stalls, take a boat ride to spot pink dolphins, and soak up the salty, slightly ramshackle charm that makes this one of Hong Kong’s most atmospheric destinations.
Highlights & What to See
- Tai O Stilt Houses: The iconic village built on stilts over the tidal flats – explore the narrow alleyways and watch fishermen at work.
- Boat Trips for Pink Dolphins: Hop on a small boat to the mouth of the Pearl River for a chance to see rare Indo-Pacific humpback dolphins (book locally).
- Tai O Market & Dried Seafood: The main street is lined with stalls selling shrimp paste, salted fish, and local snacks – try the famous egg waffles or fish balls.
- Tai O Heritage Hotel: A beautifully restored colonial police station turned boutique hotel, with a rooftop bar offering panoramic views.
- Ngong Ping 360: Take the cable car from Tung Chung to Ngong Ping Village for sweeping views of the island and the Tian Tan Buddha (Big Buddha).
- Po Lin Monastery: A working Buddhist monastery near the Big Buddha, with ornate halls and vegetarian lunch available.
- Cheung Sha Beach: A long, quiet stretch of golden sand on the south coast – perfect for a swim or a sunset stroll.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend a full day combining Tai O with the Ngong Ping attractions. Arrive early (around 9am) to beat the crowds at the Big Buddha, then head to Tai O for lunch and a late-afternoon boat trip. If you want to linger, an overnight stay in Tai O’s heritage hotel or a guesthouse lets you experience the village after day-trippers leave – plus you’ll have time for a morning walk to the nearby fishing port.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Ngong Ping & Tian Tan Buddha: Just a 20-minute bus ride from Tai O, this is the island’s most famous sight – combine easily in a single day.
- Tung Chung: The transport hub for Lantau, with the Ngong Ping 360 cable car, a large mall, and access to hiking trails like the Lantau Trail.
- Discovery Bay: A resort-style community on the north coast with beaches, restaurants, and a relaxed vibe – reachable by ferry from Central.
- Mui Wo (Silvermine Bay): A laid-back town with a sandy beach, a charming village centre, and the starting point for hikes to waterfalls and the Lantau Peak.
- Sunset Peak & Lantau Peak: For keen hikers, these two peaks offer challenging trails with stunning views – best tackled as a full-day expedition.
