Perched on the rugged Algarve coast, Lagos is a sun-soaked town where golden cliffs plunge into turquoise seas, and cobbled streets lead to lively squares. This former maritime hub blends a rich Age of Discovery history with a laid-back beach culture, making it a magnetic base for exploring the western Algarve. Expect dramatic sea caves, world-class seafood, and a buzzing nightlife that hums from April to October.
Highlights & What to See
- Ponta da Piedade – A breathtaking headland of grottoes, sea arches, and limestone stacks. Take a kayak or boat tour to paddle through hidden caves and swim in emerald lagoons.
- Praia do Camilo & Praia Dona Ana – Two iconic beaches framed by golden cliffs and wooden stairways. Arrive early to claim a spot on the fine sand and snorkel in crystalline waters.
- Old Town (Centro Histórico) – Meander through narrow streets lined with whitewashed houses, past the 16th-century Igreja de Santo António and the slave market museum (Mercado de Escravos) that recalls Lagos’s complex past.
- Boat Trips to the Benagil Cave – While Benagil is a separate village, most tours depart from Lagos. The famous sea cave with its domed skylight is a must-photograph stop along the coast.
- Marina de Lagos – A modern marina with chic bars and restaurants. Stroll the promenade at sunset and watch yachts bob against a fiery sky.
- Museu de Lagos – Housed in a former governor’s palace, this museum showcases local archaeology and art, including works by the town’s favourite son, José de Guimarães.
Suggested Time to Spend
Lagos rewards a stay of at least two to three days. Use day one to explore the old town and one of the main beaches; day two for a kayak or boat tour of Ponta da Piedade and the Benagil cave; and day three to hike the clifftop trails or visit nearby Sagres. If you’re short on time, a single full day can cover the highlights, but you’ll be tempted to linger.
