La Foa & Sarramea
Nestled in the heart of New Caledonia's rugged interior, La Foa and its mountainous neighbour Sarramea offer a serene escape from the coastal resorts. This region is a paradise for hikers and nature lovers, with lush rainforests, dramatic peaks, and a glimpse into the island's colonial past. The drive from Nouméa takes about 1.5 hours, winding through sugarcane fields and into the foothills of the Massif du Sud.
Highlights & What to See
- Parc Provincial de la Rivière Bleue – a vast protected area with towering kauri pines, crystal-clear swimming holes, and the chance to spot the endemic cagou bird. Rent a bike or take a guided walk along the river.
- Sarramea Valley – head into the valley for spectacular views of the surrounding peaks and waterfalls. The drive along the RPN2 is an adventure in itself, with narrow roads and tropical vegetation.
- La Foa Historical Sites – visit the old prison ruins and the war memorial, remnants of the area's penal colony and WWII history. The local market (Saturday mornings) is great for fresh produce and crafts.
- Mount Oungore – a challenging but rewarding hike up the highest peak in the region (1,012 m). The summit offers panoramic views over the coast and the interior.
- Falls of the Bâ – a series of cascading waterfalls accessible via a short walk from the road. Perfect for a refreshing dip on a hot day.
Suggested Time to Spend
Give La Foa and Sarramea at least two full days to soak in the natural beauty. Day one can be dedicated to the Rivière Bleue park and a gentle walk, while day two is ideal for a more strenuous hike like Mount Oungore and a visit to the waterfalls. If you're short on time, a day trip from Nouméa is possible, but you'll miss the early-morning birdlife and the chance to explore deeper.
