La Chaux-de-Fonds
La Chaux-de-Fonds, a UNESCO World Heritage site in the Swiss Jura, is the birthplace of Le Corbusier and a global watchmaking capital. Its grid-like streets, built after a devastating 1794 fire, reflect the 19th-century industrial planning that housed both factories and workers. Today, it offers a fascinating blend of horological heritage, modernist architecture, and alpine scenery.
Highlights & What to See
- International Watchmaking Museum (MIH) – One of the world’s finest horology museums, tracing timekeeping from sundials to atomic clocks, with dazzling displays of antique watches and automata.
- Le Corbusier’s Birthplace & Maison Blanche – Visit the Villa Jeanneret-Perret (Maison Blanche), the first house designed by the architect at age 25, a pristine example of early modernism.
- Watchmaking guided tours – Peek behind the scenes at workshops like Girard-Perregaux or Parmigiani Fleurier (book ahead) to see artisans assembling intricate movements.
- Art Nouveau & Industrial Architecture – Stroll Rue Léopold-Robert and Avenue Léopold-Robert for ornate façades, then explore the symmetrical “cité ouvrière” (workers’ housing) in the Espace de l’Urbanisme Horloger.
- Musée des Beaux-Arts – Houses a fine collection of Swiss and French art, including works by Hodler and a room dedicated to Le Corbusier’s paintings.
