Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park is a stunning expanse of bushland, sandstone cliffs, and hidden waterways just north of Sydney. This ancient landscape, named after the Guringai Aboriginal people, offers a perfect escape into nature with Aboriginal rock art, secluded beaches, and incredible views over Pittwater and the Hawkesbury River. Whether you're hiking, kayaking, or simply soaking in the scenery, this park feels a world away from the city.
Highlights & What to See
- West Head Lookout — One of Sydney's most breathtaking viewpoints, overlooking Barrenjoey Headland, Pittwater, and the ocean. On a clear day, you can see as far as the Central Coast.
- Aboriginal Rock Art at Basin Track — Discover well-preserved engravings of kangaroos, fish, and mythical figures at this significant cultural site, accessible via a short walk from West Head Road.
- Resolute Picnic Area & Beach — A tranquil spot with calm waters, perfect for a swim or paddle, with picnic facilities and a grassy area shaded by angophoras.
- Bobbin Head — A historic settlement on Cowan Creek with a marina, boardwalk, and the remains of an old fish hatchery. Great for a relaxed stroll and spotting water dragons.
- Great North Walk — Sections of this long-distance trail pass through the park, offering multi-day hiking opportunities through diverse landscapes.
- Kangaroo — Keep an eye out for eastern grey kangaroos grazing in open areas, especially around dawn and dusk.
Suggested Time to Spend
Allow a full day to explore the park's highlights. Start early at West Head for the best light, then visit the Aboriginal engravings and relax at Resolute Beach. If you're short on time, a half-day can cover West Head and a short walk, but you'll miss the park's quieter corners. For kayakers or serious hikers, consider an overnight trip.
