Deep in the rugged ranges of central Queensland, Kroombit Tops National Park is a wild and remote wilderness that feels a world away from the coast. This elevated plateau, cloaked in ancient rainforest and open eucalypt forest, is a haven for hikers and nature lovers seeking solitude. The park is also steeped in history—it's the crash site of a WWII B-24 Liberator bomber, adding a poignant layer to its dramatic landscapes. With deep gorges, cascading creeks, and panoramic lookouts, Kroombit Tops rewards those who make the journey with a genuine off-the-beaten-track experience.
Highlights & What to See
- B-24 Liberator Crash Site: A solemn and fascinating historical site where a WWII bomber crashed in 1943. The wreckage is still visible, and a short walk leads to memorial plaques—a must for history buffs.
- Kroombit Tops Lookout: Sweeping views over the Calliope River valley and distant peaks. Best at sunrise or late afternoon when the light paints the escarpment.
- Rainforest Walks: The park protects remnants of subtropical rainforest, with cool, shaded trails like the Woggoon Creek Circuit (3.5 km, moderate) that follows a crystal-clear creek past vine-covered trees and mossy boulders.
- Birdwatching: Look out for glossy black-cockatoos, eastern whipbirds, and the elusive paradise riflebird. The park's varied habitats attract a rich array of species.
- Four-Wheel-Drive Adventure: The unsealed roads to and within the park are rough; a high-clearance 4WD is essential. The drive itself is an adventure, winding through cattle country and up the escarpment.
Suggested Time to Spend
Kroombit Tops is best explored over a long day or an overnight stay. If you're driving from Gladstone or Rockhampton, allocate a full day (8–10 hours) to include the drive, a couple of short walks, and time at the lookout and crash site. For a more immersive experience, camp at the basic Kroombit Tops camping area (no facilities) and spend two days hiking the longer trails, such as the 6 km return Rainbow Falls Track (seasonal waterfall). The park is remote, so bring all supplies, including water and fuel.
