Kintamani is a highland region in Bali’s northeast, known for its dramatic volcanic landscape, cool mountain air, and sweeping views of Mount Batur and its caldera lake. This is where you escape the coastal humidity and immerse yourself in a raw, otherworldly scenery shaped by ancient eruptions. The main draw is the panoramic vista from the ridge, but the area also offers trekking, traditional villages, and a chance to experience Bali’s quieter, more spiritual side.
Highlights & What to See
- Mount Batur & Lake Batur: The star attraction – a still-active volcano with a crescent-shaped caldera lake. Sunrise treks to the summit are iconic, rewarding you with golden light over the crater and across to Mount Agung.
- Pura Ulun Danu Batur: A significant temple dedicated to the goddess of lakes, Dewi Danu. It’s a serene spot with traditional Balinese architecture set against the volcanic backdrop.
- Kintamani Viewpoints: Several warungs and restaurants along the ridge offer front-row seats to the volcano-lake panorama. Penelokan is the classic viewpoint; grab a coffee and soak it in.
- Trunyan Village: An isolated Bali Aga village on Lake Batur’s eastern shore, known for its unique burial customs. Accessible by boat from Kedisan – a fascinating cultural detour.
- Hot Springs: Toya Devasya and other natural hot springs near the lake shore provide a soothing soak after a trek, with views of the volcano.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors experience Kintamani as a half-day outing from Ubud or the south, arriving mid-morning for the view and a buffet lunch. However, to truly appreciate the area, consider an overnight stay. Arrive in the late afternoon, watch the sunset over the caldera, and rise early for a Mount Batur sunrise trek (around 4am start). The trek takes 2-3 hours up and 1.5 hours down; you’ll be back by mid-morning. Combine with the hot springs and a temple visit, and you’ll have a full, rewarding day.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Ubud: The cultural heart of Bali is about a 1.5-hour drive south. Pair Kintamani with a day in Ubud’s rice terraces, art markets, and temples.
- Tegalalang Rice Terraces: On the way between Ubud and Kintamani, these iconic green terraces make a perfect photo stop.
- Tirta Empul Temple: The holy water temple near Tampaksiring is a short detour south of Kintamani, offering a cleansing ritual experience.
- Besakih Temple: Bali’s “Mother Temple” on the slopes of Mount Agung is about an hour east, a grand spiritual site with stunning mountain views.
