The Keppel Bay Islands, a stunning cluster of 16 tropical islands off the coast of Yeppoon in Central Queensland, offer a quintessential Australian island escape. With powdery white beaches, fringing coral reefs, and a laid-back vibe, these islands are perfect for snorkeling, hiking, and simply unwinding in nature. Great Keppel Island is the most accessible and popular, but the smaller, less developed islands provide a true Robinson Crusoe experience.
Highlights & What to See
- Great Keppel Island: The hub of the group, with 17 beaches, clear turquoise waters, and the famous Monkey Beach. Snorkel right off the sand or join a reef tour to see turtles and colourful fish.
- Middle Island: Home to the stunning Wreck Beach and the remains of the SS Gothenburg (a 19th-century steamer). A great spot for history and solitude.
- North Keppel Island: A haven for birdwatchers and hikers, with walking trails through open eucalypt forest leading to panoramic lookouts.
- Keppel Bay Islands National Park: Protects pristine coastal landscapes, including hoop pines, rocky headlands, and secluded coves. Many islands offer basic camping.
- Snorkeling & Diving: The fringing reefs around the islands are part of the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park. Expect coral bommies, giant clams, and an abundance of marine life.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend a day trip to Great Keppel Island, which is enough to enjoy a few beaches and snorkel spots. However, to truly appreciate the archipelago, stay 2–3 nights on Great Keppel (accommodation ranges from eco-resorts to camping). This allows time for a hike to the summit of Mount Wyndham for panoramic views, a kayak paddle to nearby islands, and a sunset cruise. If you're camping on one of the lesser-known islands, plan for at least 3–4 nights to explore fully.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Yeppoon: The mainland gateway, with a charming esplanade, cafes, and the Yeppoon Lagoon. A great base for provisioning before island hopping.
- Rockhampton: A historic city with a vibrant arts scene, known for its heritage architecture and the Great Western Hotel (home to live rodeo). It's an hour's drive from Yeppoon.
- Mount Archer National Park: Just north of Rockhampton, offering scenic drives and hiking trails with views over the Fitzroy River.
- Capricorn Caves: A spectacular limestone cave system near Rockhampton, perfect for a half-day adventure.
- Byfield National Park: A rugged coastal park with rainforest, towering sand dunes, and the mighty Waterpark Creek. Ideal for 4WD and camping.
- Southern Great Barrier Reef: The Keppel Islands are part of this region; consider extending your trip to Lady Elliot or Heron Island for more reef experiences.
