Kau Sai Chau, a rugged island in Port Shelter just off the Sai Kung Peninsula, is a world away from Hong Kong's urban bustle. Known for its public golf course, it also offers excellent hiking, kayaking, and quiet beaches. The island's wild, hilly terrain and coastal trails reward visitors with sweeping views of the South China Sea. It's a perfect half-day escape for nature lovers and active travellers.
Highlights & What to See
- Kau Sai Chau Public Golf Course – The only public golf course in Hong Kong, set against dramatic coastal scenery. Even non-golfers can enjoy the clubhouse restaurant with panoramic views.
- Hiking Trails – The island's network of trails leads to rocky headlands, secluded coves, and the summit of Kau Sai Chau (150m) for 360-degree vistas of the surrounding islands.
- Kayaking & Water Sports – Launch from the Sai Kung pier to explore the island's hidden bays and sea caves. Clear waters make for excellent snorkelling.
- Beaches – Small sandy beaches like Pak Lap Wan and Tai Hang Hau offer peaceful spots for a swim or picnic.
- Wildlife – Keep an eye out for hawks, butterflies, and the occasional wild boar. The island's undeveloped interior is a haven for birdlife.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend 3–5 hours on Kau Sai Chau, combining a hike with a round of golf or kayaking. Arrive early to avoid the midday heat and catch the morning ferry from Sai Kung. If you're playing golf, allocate at least 4 hours for 18 holes. For a relaxed visit, take the first ferry, hike to the summit, then enjoy lunch at the clubhouse before catching an afternoon ferry back.
