Flinders Chase National Park is the wild, windswept heart of Kangaroo Island, a place where the Southern Ocean has sculpted dramatic granite boulders and limestone cliffs into jaw-dropping formations. This is raw nature at its finest: kangaroos bound across heathland, Cape Barren geese honk from rocky outcrops, and the air smells of saltbush and eucalyptus. For self-drive travellers, the park is an essential stop on any KI itinerary, offering walks, wildlife encounters, and landscapes that feel like a prehistoric dream.
Highlights & What to See
- Remarkable Rocks: A cluster of weather-sculpted granite boulders balanced precariously on a cliff edge. Visit at sunrise or sunset for the best light and fewer crowds.
- Admirals Arch: A natural rock bridge battered by the Southern Ocean, with a colony of New Zealand fur seals playing in the surf below. The boardwalk offers superb photo ops.
- Weirs Cove & Cape du Couedic Lighthouse: Historic lighthouse precinct with a short walk to the cove where supplies were once hauled up the cliff. Keep an eye out for echidnas.
- Flinders Chase Visitor Centre: Excellent interpretive displays on the park's ecology and history, plus maps and advice for walking trails.
- Platypus Waterholes Walk: A 2.5 km loop through gum forest to a permanent waterhole where you might spot shy platypuses at dawn or dusk (best in cooler months).
- Snelling Beach & West Bay: Secluded sandy coves perfect for a picnic or a bracing swim; access via unsealed roads.
Suggested Time to Spend
Dedicate a full day to properly explore the park's main sites. Most visitors arrive from Kingscote or Penneshaw, and a self-drive loop from the visitor centre to Remarkable Rocks, then Admirals Arch, then back via the Platypus Waterholes takes about 5–6 hours including short walks. If you're keen on longer hikes (e.g. the 6 km Cape du Couedic to Remarkable Rocks coastal walk), plan for a second day. Overnight at nearby accommodation in Flinders Chase or Parndana to catch sunrise at Remarkable Rocks.

- Penneshaw: The ferry port town with a penguin centre and good seafood; a natural gateway to the island.
- Kingscote: The island's main hub for supplies, dining, and history; home to the Kangaroo Island Spirits distillery.
