Perched on the rugged southwestern tip of Kangaroo Island, Cape du Couedic Lighthouse is a striking white tower that has guided mariners since 1909. The dramatic coastal scenery here is pure South Australian wilderness: sheer limestone cliffs, the thunderous Southern Ocean, and a sky that seems to stretch forever. This is a place for raw nature lovers, where the roar of waves and the screech of seabirds set the soundtrack. The lighthouse itself is a photogenic landmark, but the real draw is the surrounding landscape and its wildlife — expect to see New Zealand fur seals basking on the rocks below and, if you're lucky, dolphins surfing the swell.
Highlights & What to See
- Cape du Couedic Lighthouse – Climb to the top of this historic lighthouse for sweeping views of the coast and the Southern Ocean (check access as it may be limited).
- Admirals Arch – A spectacular natural rock arch carved by the sea, just a short walk from the lighthouse. Watch fur seals play in the swirling waters beneath it.
- Remarkable Rocks – A short drive away, these enormous, weather-sculpted granite boulders sit precariously on a cliff edge. They’re a photographer’s dream, especially at sunset.
- Weirs Cove – The historic jetty and flying fox used to supply the lighthouse. A glimpse into the island’s pioneering past.
- Flinders Chase National Park – The lighthouse sits within this park, which also protects rare wildlife like kangaroos, echidnas, and goannas. Keep an eye out for the resident koalas.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend 1–2 hours exploring the lighthouse area, including the walk to Admirals Arch and a stop at the viewing platform. If you’re combining with Remarkable Rocks and other Flinders Chase highlights, budget a full day for the western end of the island. The lighthouse is best visited in the late afternoon for golden light and fewer crowds, but morning light is also beautiful for photography. Allow at least 30 minutes for the walk to Admirals Arch and back.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Flinders Chase National Park – The park’s visitor centre and walking trails are just a few kilometres away. Great for a bushwalk or a picnic.
- Remarkable Rocks – A 10-minute drive from the lighthouse, these surreal boulders are unmissable. Combine both in the same afternoon.
- Kelly Hill Caves – Explore limestone caves with guided tours, about 20 minutes east of the lighthouse.
- Vivonne Bay – One of Australia’s most beautiful beaches, perfect for a swim or a coastal walk, 30 minutes away.
- Seal Bay Conservation Park – See Australian sea lions up close on a guided beach walk, 45 minutes east along the south coast.
- Kingscote – The island’s main town, with cafes, shops, and the penguin centre, about 1.5 hours from the lighthouse. A good base for accommodation.
