On the rugged southwestern tip of Kangaroo Island, Admirals Arch is a spectacular natural bridge carved by the relentless Southern Ocean. This dramatic limestone arch is the centerpiece of Flinders Chase National Park, where boardwalks lead you to prime viewing platforms. The air is thick with salt spray and the roar of the ocean, while a colony of long-nosed fur seals plays in the swirling waters below. It’s a raw, wild place that captures the untamed spirit of South Australia’s coastline.
Highlights & What to See
- The Arch Itself: Walk the boardwalk to the main lookout for a stunning view of the arch’s sheer walls and the turquoise water churning through it. The best light is in the late afternoon when the limestone glows golden.
- Fur Seal Colony: Watch New Zealand fur seals lounging on the rocks and surfing the waves. Their antics are endlessly entertaining, and you can get surprisingly close from the elevated platforms.
- Remarkable Rocks: A short drive away, these giant, weather-sculpted granite boulders sit atop a dome of rock, offering surreal shapes and panoramic ocean views. They’re a photographer’s dream, especially at sunset.
- Flinders Chase National Park: The park itself is a haven for wildlife, including kangaroos, wallabies, and echidnas. Keep an eye out for the rare Kangaroo Island kangaroo and the glossy black-cockatoo.
Suggested Time to Spend
Dedicate 1–2 hours to explore Admirals Arch and the boardwalks. If you’re combining it with Remarkable Rocks (a must), allow at least half a day for the western end of the island. Many visitors base themselves in Kingscote or American River and make a full-day drive to the park, which is about 90 minutes from Kingscote. Arrive early to avoid crowds and enjoy the wildlife at its most active.
