Perched on a rugged stretch of coastline where the snow-capped Seaward Kaikōura Range plunges into the Pacific, Kaikōura is New Zealand’s premier marine wildlife destination. This small town on the South Island’s east coast is famous for sperm whales, dusky dolphins, and fur seals, as well as its crayfish (the name means ‘meal of crayfish’ in Māori). Whether you’re whale-watching at dawn, hiking a peninsula track, or feasting on fresh seafood, Kaikōura delivers raw natural drama.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Two full days allow you to do a whale-watching tour, walk the peninsula, and sample the seafood. If you’re driving the Christchurch–Picton route (State Highway 1), an overnight stop is ideal – arrive early afternoon, do the walk, then take a morning whale tour before continuing north or south. With three days you can add a dolphin swim or a scenic flight over the mountains.
