Kabah Archaeological Zone
Deep in the Puuc hills of Yucatán, Kabah is a Maya archaeological site that rewards those who venture off the main tourist trail. Its name means 'the powerful hand' in Maya, and the site is dominated by the spectacular Palace of the Masks, its facade covered in hundreds of stone mosaic masks of the rain god Chaac. With fewer crowds than nearby Uxmal, Kabah offers a more intimate encounter with ancient Maya architecture and the dense jungle that surrounds it.
Highlights & What to See
- Palace of the Masks (Codz Poop) – The centrepiece of Kabah, this building is covered in over 250 stone masks of Chaac, with curling noses that double as stairways. The effect is both eerie and magnificent.
- The Great Pyramid – Climb this steep structure for sweeping views of the Puuc jungle and the ruins below. The summit once held a temple, now largely gone.
- The Arch of Kabah – A finely preserved corbel arch that once marked the entrance to the site from the sacbe (white road) connecting Kabah to Uxmal. It stands alone in the forest, photogenic and evocative.
- The Temple of the Columns – A long building with rows of columns, typical of the Puuc style. Its simple elegance contrasts with the ornate masks nearby.
- Sacbe (White Road) – A 18-km raised causeway linking Kabah to Uxmal. Parts are visible, and walking a short stretch gives a sense of ancient Maya travel.
Suggested Time to Spend
Plan for 1.5 to 2 hours to explore the main structures at a relaxed pace. Kabah is compact, so you can see the highlights without rushing. Combine it with a morning at Uxmal (20 minutes away) and perhaps a stop at the lesser-known ruins of Sayil or Labná in the afternoon. Arrive early to beat the heat and the tour buses that start arriving around 10am.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Uxmal – The grandest of the Puuc sites, with its towering Pyramid of the Magician and intricate Governor's Palace. A must-see, and just a short drive from Kabah.

- Labná – Known for its stunning arched gateway and the Palace with intricate stonework. Combine with Kabah and Sayil for a full Puuc route day.

- Mérida – The colonial capital of Yucatán, 90 minutes north, offers excellent cuisine, markets, and a base for exploring the region. Don't miss the Haciendas nearby.
